On Outdoors Adventure and Survival Skills

There are so many kinds of Outdoors Adventure.

The most popular and very economical is walking.

        And then upgrade to hiking.

        And then bushwhacking.

And then upgrade to backpacking (combination of hiking and camping).

And then upgrade to extreme adventure such as cross country travels. Such travel will involve all kinds of discipline in surviving the great outdoors.

Survival skills in the mountains, in the lowlands, in the dessert, in snowy mountains, in areas with vast marsh lands, lakes, rivers and then the ocean, is varied and vast,  that maybe at least once in our lifetime, we will encounter an adventure where we need to make use of the recreational skills.  (hiking, camping, first / advanced aid, swimming, river swimming, outdoors cooking, rescue, self rescue, self contained)

However, in this days and age, survival skills should not be taken lightly. Should I say, it is not only for outdoors enthusiast or for those who are adventure thirst, but it is for EVERYONE because just recently - due to the degradation of the environment - so many disasters are happening in everyone's BACKYARDS.

Without knowledge or not having any background on survival skills, our generation will definitely perish.

Hence, our pursuit is not only for recreation. It is learning survival thru recreation.

When hiking, it is not all a walk in a park, but when one gets to be adapt to the environment, we can survive.

Skills such as strong sense of observing the movements of the waters, the sky, the clouds (meteorology), the sounds of animals, will help anyone survive not only the mountains but the future of any urban civilization.

We need to remember that the urban areas were not urban before it became all cements and all. These were mountains or plains. It was nature. And nobody can beat nature.

Indoor Team Building before doing the Outdoor Mini Adventure Race.

The participants are sponsored by the Agriculture Training Institute of Department of Tourism.

For us to move towards one destination, just like in hiking as a group, bushwhacking as a group, we need to be able to work as one. Hence, in an indoor setting, participants were challenged to build a puzzle together with a time limit. These activities are prepared for urbanites and office folks, preparing them for a little bit more physical and mentally draining - adventure race.

Mountain Kitchen at Kibugan. Where the folks have their food stacked up and dried while cooking. Kinuday or Kini-ing or smoked meat are also above the wooden stove so as to have a multiple use of the heat cooking the meals.

The world offers a lot of interesting destinations.

This rice terraces can be found at Kibungan. Althought Banawe is popular for its rice terraces, other areas in Benguet and the Mountain Provinces also have unique ways of terracing.
